Best Lawyers® presents the second edition of Best Law Firms™ – Spain, expanding its recognition of leading legal practices across the country.
This year’s results include 1,015 firms, representing the top 1% of firms nationwide, highlighting the select nature of the recognition. The rankings are based on nearly twenty years of evaluating Spain’s leading individual lawyers, alongside more than 17 years firm-level rankings in the United States.
The 2027 edition builds on the previous year’s release, capturing how Spain’s legal market continues to shift as firms respond to evolving client demands and regulatory change.
A Rigorous, Peer-Driven Methodology
The credibility of these rankings is rooted in a transparent research process developed in 2009 and refined over 15 years. To ensure the results reflect true professional proficiency, a firm becomes eligible for a ranking only after at least one of its lawyers receives individual recognition in The Best Lawyers in Spain™.
This year’s research reflects deep industry engagement: more than 5,000 lawyers cast votes and 2,000 client references provided feedback on their experiences and more than 1,000 firms were surveyed across Spain.
The scale of this participation is further highlighted by the 226 firms that submitted detailed law firm surveys and the 131 firms that provided client references for evaluation. Supported by 600 practice group interviews, this data-driven approach ensures the final rankings provide a thorough map of legal distinction.

A National Perspective: Scale and Regional Depth
The 2027 edition of Best Law Firms – Spain demonstrates the expansive nature of the Spanish legal sector, covering 55 practice areas across 24 geographic jurisdictions. This year’s rankings signal an evolving footprint with the inclusion of Almería and Logroño as the newest jurisdictions.
This extensive scope resulted in 4,453 regional rankings awarded, showcasing the specialized services available from major metropolitan hubs to emerging legal centers. On a national level, the rankings recognized 309 firms across 25 practice areas.
Market Momentum: Dominant Practice Areas
The 2027 honors reveal a high concentration of recognized talent in sectors that form the bedrock of Spain’s current commercial activity. Nationally, Tax Law and Corporate and Mergers and Acquisitions Law lead as the most represented practice areas, followed closely by Litigation, Insolvency and Reorganization Law and Corporate Governance and Compliance Practice.
The consistency of these top five areas reveals the core legal challenges currently occupying the focus of Spain’s leading firms. The high volume of such distinctions in these fields reflects an industry that is increasingly prioritizing fiscal health, corporate restructuring and adherence to a rapidly changing European regulatory framework.
Why These Practice Areas Lead
The composition of this year’s leading practice areas is a direct response to the specific regulatory pressures and transactional shifts observed across Spain's business landscape.
- The "Value over Volume" M&A Surge: Leading Spanish firms have seen a major takeoff in M&A and Private Equity at the start of 2026. While deal counts have fluctuated, the first quarter saw a 64% surge in capital mobilized, totaling €36.2 billion.
- Intensified Financial Control: Under Spain's key fiscal measures for 2026, the government has implemented stricter tax reporting and oversight. This heightened audit environment, combined with new environmental tax incentives, has kept Tax Law at the center of national legal activity.
- Maturation of Insolvency Frameworks: Following the widespread adoption of the reformed Ley Concursal, 2026 has marked a turning point in the use of "planes de reestructuración." Recent activity involving major companies filing for insolvency protection early this year has underscored the essential role of Insolvency and Reorganization Law in preserving business viability.
- Regulatory Compliance and Food Waste Reform: The April enforcement of Law 1/2025 regarding food waste prevention introduced mandatory internal plans for businesses across the supply chain. This is a primary example of the new regulatory hurdles currently driving the focus on Corporate Governance and Compliance.
- Strategic Arbitration and Enforcement: With Madrid hosting the 2026 International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress, Spain has solidified its position as a global hub for dispute resolution. This international focus, combined with the CNMC’s 2026 guidelines for hardening competition fines, has increased the necessity for specialized Litigation counsel.
Takeaways from the Spain Legal Market Report
Spain’s legal environment is modernizing thoughtfully. While digital shifts and economic pressures are pushing firms to evolve, the industry remains anchored by specialization and trust.
These insights are drawn from the Best Law Firms – Spain Legal Market Report, which is released alongside our latest rankings. The report provides a comprehensive look at the operations of more than 200 large, midsize, small and solo law firms across the country. By analyzing data on financial performance, billing practices, client relationships, AI adoption, geographic reach, marketing and diversity and ESG efforts, the report offers a snapshot of how the profession is navigating change.
Core Findings
The report highlights an increasingly decentralized yet highly competitive legal market. While firms are scaling to meet the demands of a growing economy, size alone is not the defining factor in long-term success.
- Relationship-Driven Growth: Referrals and repeat business remain central to firm growth. For nearly 80% of large firms, new work is driven primarily by existing clients.
- Technology Modernization: In terms of technology, generative AI adoption currently stands at 42% among large-scale firms. This integration is occurring alongside a market effort to formalize the governance and client-matter policies necessary for these tools. As practices across Spain refine these standards, the industry continues to balance technological advancement with established professional requirements.
- Small Firm Resilience: Small and solo firms reported a revenue per lawyer nearly identical to that of their midsize counterparts. This parity reflects a market where deep industry specialization and lower overhead allow boutique firms to remain highly competitive.

What Spanish Clients Value Today: Observations from Our Research
The research process for Best Law Firms brings us into direct contact with the market through client feedback. These observations clarify the current priorities of the Spanish industry. While technical excellence remains essential, the feedback indicates that leading firms are distinguished by their ability to pair strong legal analysis with practical business judgment.
Responsiveness and Accessibility
One consistent theme throughout client feedback is the high value placed on responsiveness. This expectation for immediacy is often paired with a demand for proactive guidance. Firms that anticipate client needs rather than simply respond to them are increasingly viewed as long-term advisors rather than solely service providers.
Trust and Personal Connection
Unlike more operationally driven legal markets, the Spanish feedback strongly suggests that trust, specialization and personal connection remain central to client relationships. These relationships are built less through formal service structures and more through long-term collaboration and a practical, human approach to legal challenges.
Specialization and Pragmatism
The firms that stand out in this year’s research are those that combine deep subject-matter knowledge with a clear understanding of their clients’ business realities. In a market where specialization remains a major differentiator, client feedback suggests that lasting success depends on pairing strong legal counsel with a genuine sense of partnership.
