The Criteria Behind Best Law Firms
The rankings are based on the established Best Law Firms methodology, developed in 2009 and refined through years of research and evaluation. The Rankings are informed by client feedback and references, peer review from lawyers, firm submissions and firmographic data and interviews with firm leadership. To be eligible, a firm must have at least one lawyer recognized in The Best Lawyers in Australia™.
The 2027 research drew on responses from more than 4,500 lawyers, 3,000 client references, over 600 firm surveys and 400 practice group interviews conducted across the market. Together, these inputs reflect how firms perform across every dimension that matters, from the experience of clients to the judgment of peers, offering a credible, well-rounded picture of legal practice across Australia.

Drivers of Growth: Why These Practice Areas Lead
The prominence of this year’s top practice areas reflects broader shifts in Australia’s regulatory and economic framework. The trends driving these rankings mirror those identified in our analysis of the 2027 edition of The Best Lawyers in Australia. Key factors include:
- Heightened Scrutiny: Increased enforcement from regulators like ASIC and the ACCC is driving significant volume in Litigation and Commercial Law, particularly regarding consumer protection and data privacy
- A "Hard Market" in Insurance: Rising premiums and complex cyber-insurance claims have solidified Insurance Law as a critical area of specialization.
- Strategic Resolution: As court pressures mount, Alternative Dispute Resolution continues to grow, with businesses prioritizing the speed and confidentiality of arbitration.
- Operational Shifts: The integration of AI and new mandatory merger control regimes are reshaping the advisory needs of corporate clients nationwide.

- The AI Adoption Gap: Adoption is widespread, but its impact on core business functions remains uneven, raising questions about where it is delivering real value.

These early findings highlight just a portion of the trends shaping the market. The full report will be released on June 2.
The Evolution of Client Integration from Our Research
While the Legal Market Report focuses on industry-wide data, our research process also provides access to client feedback, offering an exclusive perspective on what matters most to clients. In previous cycles, the mindset focused on technical specialization and reliable service. However, current feedback suggests a transition from seeking legal work to seeking proactive, commercially minded advisors. Clients are prioritizing firms that understand the internal mechanics of their organization.
The research highlights several areas where expectations have sharpened:
- Operational Alignment: Firms are no longer viewed as external consultants but as extensions of the client’s team. Proactivity has become a requirement for advisors who connect legal strategy with business objectives.
- Outcome-Driven Efficiency: While responsiveness is essential, it has evolved into a focus on turnaround speed and cost awareness. Clients value firms that comprehend budget constraints and prioritize efficient workflows.
- Business-Minded Guidance: There is a need for advice that considers the commercial reality of a situation. Law firms are measured by their ability to provide guidance that supports corporate strategy and long-term goals.
These patterns indicate that technical skill is a prerequisite, while the differentiator is a firm’s capacity to integrate into operations and contribute to client success.
