Following the successful launch of its inaugural edition, Best Law Firms™ – France returns for a second year, celebrating law firms for professional excellence across the French legal market. Building on that strong foundation, the 2027 awards provide clients and legal professionals with an independent resource for identifying leading firms across the country.

This year’s results carry that momentum forward as technology, pricing and client relationships continue to shape legal practice.

How Best Law Firms – France Research Comes Together

Best Lawyers® developed the Best Law Firms methodology to evaluate firms within their respective practice areas using a range of professional and client perspectives.

For the 2027 France edition, the research process included surveys of 3,687 lawyers and 837 firms, 8,500 client references and more than 100 practice group interviews. These contributions help build a broader picture of firm performance and standing across France.

Where French Law Firms Are Most Widely Recognized

This year’s Best Law Firms – France results show where recognition is most concentrated across the national legal market. Based on the total number of firms recognized in each area, these five practices have the broadest representation in our awards:

  1. Banking and Finance Law
  2. Corporate Law
  3. Litigation
  4. Labor and Employment Law and Mergers and Acquisitions Law
  5. Privacy and Data Security Law

Compared with the 2026 Best Law Firms – France results, four practices remain among the most widely represented. Banking and Finance Law joins the group, while Tax Law moves outside the top five. Labor and Employment Law and Mergers and Acquisitions Law are tied, with Privacy and Data Security Law following closely behind.

A similar picture emerges in The Best Lawyers in France™ 2027, with Corporate Law, Mergers and Acquisitions Law, Labor and Employment Law and Litigation also appearing among its five most recognized practice areas. Tax Law rounds out the Best Lawyers top five, while Banking and Finance Law completes the Best Law Firms – France list.

Banking and Finance Law Leads Amid an Evolving Regulatory Environment

Banking and Finance Law is the most represented national practice area in this year’s results. One factor that may contribute to this prevalence is the continued evolution of the regulatory environment, as European supervisors work to simplify aspects of banking oversight while maintaining prudential safeguards.

In March 2026, the European Central Bank announced changes to its supervision of banks’ internal credit-risk models, including a faster approval process for significant model changes beginning in October 2026. These developments add to the regulatory and risk-management considerations facing financial institutions and their advisers.

Corporate and M&A Practices Reflect Continued Transaction Activity

Corporate Law and Mergers and Acquisitions Law remain strongly represented as dealmaking continues across France. For example, PwC recorded 4,435 M&A transactions in France in 2025, a 16% increase from the previous year, with foreign investors accounting for 55% of transactions.

Investment activity has continued into 2026, particularly in technology and innovation, with French startups raising €4.6 billion in the first half of the year, up 65% in value from the same period in 2025.

Litigation Remains Central as the Disputes Landscape Expands

France’s disputes environment continues to evolve following the expansion of its class action framework in 2025. The broader regime extends collective actions beyond their previous scope, while commercial disputes increasingly involve areas including competition law, environmental liability, financial fraud, cybersecurity and data protection. These developments provide a strong backdrop for Litigation’s continued position among France’s most represented practice areas.

Employment Law Responds to a Changing Regulatory Framework

Labor and Employment Law remains prominent as employers navigate a series of regulatory and policy changes. Measures taking effect in 2026 have addressed areas including employer contributions, professional transitions and unemployment benefits following certain mutual termination agreements. France is also moving forward with the transposition of the EU Pay Transparency Directive, adding another significant compliance consideration for employers and employment counsel.

Data Security Moves Higher on the Compliance Agenda

Privacy and Data Security Law is also widely represented as French organizations face heightened scrutiny over the protection of personal information. In 2026, the CNIL is dedicating half of its inspections and enforcement activity to data security, following a series of large-scale data breaches. Its oversight is focusing on compliance with security requirements under the GDPR, particularly for organizations handling large volumes of sensitive or highly personal data.

Three Trends Shaping Legal Practice in France

Beyond the rankings, the Best Law Firms – France 2027 survey results offer a closer look at how French law firms are responding to shifts in technology, pricing and client expectations. Responses from 167 firms point to new ways of working alongside enduring reliance on trust, specialization and long-term connections.

1. AI Adoption Raises a New Question: Client Transparency

Generative AI is moving beyond experimentation in the French legal market. Among those answering the adoption question, 46% said they had fully implemented GenAI tools, while another 31% were piloting them. Communication, however, is developing at a different pace. Among AI-using firms that addressed disclosure, 51% said they discuss their use of GenAI only when clients ask.

As Valerie Smith observes, “The contrast between internal governance and external communication is especially interesting. Firms are investing in training and policies, yet most still wait for clients to raise the subject. As client expectations become more defined, proactive and plain-language disclosure could become an important trust signal.”

2. Pricing Is Becoming Part of the Client Experience

Flexibility is also evident in how legal services are priced. Of those answering the alternative billing question, 82% offer at least one alternative arrangement, indicating that options beyond the traditional hourly model have become common.

Cost transparency is similarly widespread. Among respondents addressing billing practices, 94% provide detailed invoices, pointing to greater visibility around legal spend alongside more flexible approaches to pricing.

Smith connects that transparency with the broader client experience, “The transparency data matters just as much as the fee structures themselves. Detailed invoices, upfront estimates and regular budget updates are now common practices among respondents. The low incidence of billing disputes suggests that predictability and communication are doing meaningful work in the client relationship.”

3. Relationships Drive Growth — But Listening Has Room to Grow

Established connections remain a powerful source of new business. Sixty-six percent said returning clients or referrals account for at least half of their new work.

Formal listening practices, however, are far less common. Only 16% said they regularly conduct client surveys, revealing a notable gap between reliance on repeat business and the consistent use of structured feedback. Specialization also stands out as a defining strength: 93% cited deep specialization as a way they differentiate, underscoring the value firms place on distinct expertise.

As Elizabeth Petit, SVP of Research & Product Strategy at Best Lawyers, notes, “When two-thirds of responding firms get at least half of their new work from returning clients or opportunity is to manage that asset with the same discipline firms apply to other parts of the business.”
